Overview

This position supports the work of the YMCA, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The West Cook YMCAs Personal Trainer will provide fitness consultations, one-on-one, and small group personal training sessions, and assistance with and/or be prepared to substitute for classes, programming and special events.  This is done with an emphasis on maintaining safety and the quality of the program, remaining up-to-date on fitness trends and education materials, and increasing the number of participants served.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates a commitment to continuing education, expanding knowledge base and practical skills.
  • Maintains certifications and stays up to date on the latest trends.
  • Attends all required meetings as directed by their supervisor.
  • Screens participants carefully for risk factors, and any health problem or medical limitation. 5. Provides connection to community resources such as health care providers when needed.
  • Documents all pre-participation screening and completes baseline & follow up assessments to show progress
  • Follows YMCA policies and guidelines and enforces policies with clients
  • Provides follow-up assessment, appropriate to participant’s goals, at least quarterly. Documents outcomes.
  • Explains goals of each type of activity or exercise and how to monitor.
  • Assists participants to perform exercise in a motivational manor.
  • Designs programs and curriculum that meets the individual participant’s goals.
  • Is competent at demonstrating safe and effective technique. Can modify all individuals.
  • Connects participants to the YMCA to deepen their involvement (other classes, programs, people, events, and so forth).
  • Is conscientious of how the environment is affecting the participant and the YMCA membership base; share equipment and space with members and guests, speak/motivate at a level that motivates but does not over power.
  • Maintains visual contact at all times, monitor level of fatigue or stress and provide modifications and rest.
  • Guides participants skillfully through transitions with easily understood cues.
  • Set up equipment and stores it securely and maintains the cleanliness and safety of the wellness and classroom areas, and the pool.
  • Build relationships with your team if you cannot provide the lesson/training the first step should always be to connect your participant with another YMCA instructor versus missing a session.
  • Gains consent, records, and provides client success stories
  • Increases participate engagement.
  • Meets or exceeds assigned participant goals annually.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Current personal training certification through a national organization (ACE, NASM, ACSM, AFAA, NSCA, etc.)
  • Certification or willingness to receive certification within 60 days of hire in CPR/AED, First Aid, and Blood borne Pathogens through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross
  • Certification or willingness to receive certification in Child Abuse Prevention
  • Demonstrate ability to work with all age groups and levels of ability
  • Knowledge of exercise physiology, kinesiology, safe training procedures, exercise program implementation, and proper cardiovascular, resistance, free weight, and related fitness equipment
  • Willingness and ability to work early morning, evening, and weekends

Posted Salary Range

USD $21.00 - USD $27.00 /Hr.
